PHOTOGRAPHY AND BOOKMAKING IN SOUTHERN FRANCE
La Cascade Artist Retreat Center, Durfort, France
July 24 – 31, 2015
With Carl Coan and Dayle Doroshow
Experience the rich landscape of the Languedoc region of Southern France and the unique cultural resources of its artists, past and present. Imagine taking beautiful photos at every turn- in the early morning light, the golden glow of afternoon and a special night photography field trip. Now add to this creating your own handmade book or jewelry inspired by the photographs you take! We’ll be based at the retreat center La Cascade, a beautifully restored stone house in the village of Durfort, one hour east of Toulouse. The village of Durfort has been making copperware since the Middle Ages and artisans continue to work here-silk, jewelry, leather, basketry and glass.
This is not only a travel photography class. With this workshop, you will take and use your photos as the centerpiece for a handmade book, journal, or jewelry. Each day will include a field trip to capture images that define the southwest of France. We will visit Revel on Market day (named one of the 100 Most Beautiful Markets in France) to capture the color and texture of the food as well as the people who sell and the people who buy. Charming medieval villages have local churches that will challenge you to capture the stained glass along with amazing ancient architecture. Sunflower fields, flea markets, ancient castles and chateaus await you! The French countryside is a photographer’s delight!
The Workshop: Instructed Art Studio each day, an inspirational photography field trip each day and Open Studio each night. You don’t need expensive equipment. Even a smartphone camera can be effective. We will talk about our images using an iPad or laptop, and even print images so you can use them in your artwork.
La Cascade: Bedrooms are double occupancy (two twin beds) with shared bathrooms. The beautiful art studio is located on the third floor of the house and is available to work in whenever you want. Living room, dining room and a large outside terrace that goes down to the river are part of our home. We will be feted with wonderful food and wine prepared daily by our personal chef. The price of the workshop includes most of your meals.
Workshop price of $2400 ($2,200 before May 15, 2014) includes:
